Farsighted network formation

چکیده
This paper studies a model of dynamic network formation when individuals are farsighted : players evaluate the desirability of a “current" move in terms of its consequences on the entire discounted stream of payoffs. We define a concept of equilibrium which takes into account farsighted behavior of agents and allows for limited cooperation amongst agents. We show that an equilibrium process of network formation exists. We also show that there are valuation structures in which no equilibrium strategy profile can sustain efficient networks. We then provide sufficient conditions under which the equilibrium process will yield efficient outcomes. Thanks to Guillaume Haeringer and an anonymous referee for helpful comments. Networks and farsighted stability
We make two main contributions to the theory of economic and social network formation. First, we introduce the notion of a network formation network or a supernetwork. Supernetworks provide a framework in which we can formally define and analyze farsightedness in network formation. Second, we introduce a new notion of equilibrium corresponding to farsightedness. In particular, we introduce the ...

We make two main contributions to the theory of network formation. First, we introduce a new notion of farsighted equilibrium in network formation. In particular, we introduce the notion of a farsightedly basic network, as well as the notion of a farsighted basis. Given the feasible set of networks, the rules governing network formation, and the preferences of individuals, a farsightedly basic ...
متن کاملFarsighted free trade networks
The paper examines the strategic stability and the e¢ ciency of free trade networks. We reconsider the endogenous tari¤ model introduced by Goyal and Joshi (2006). Di¤erent from their analysis with myopic countries, we adopt a new solution concept, pairwise farsighted stable set (Herings, Mauleon and Vannetelbosch, 2009, GEB), to examine the formation of free trade agreements (FTAs) as a networ...
متن کاملMyopic or Farsighted ? An Experiment on Network Formation Georg KIRCHSTEIGER
Pairwise stability (Jackson and Wolinsky, 1996) is the standard stability concept in network formation. It assumes myopic behavior of the agents in the sense that they do not forecast how others might react to their actions. Assuming that agents are farsighted, related stability concepts have been proposed. We design a simple network formation experiment to test these theories. Our results prov...
متن کاملEnergy efficient routing algorithm for fiber-wireless access networks: A network formation game approach
New multimedia services and ubiquitous networking pose great challenges on existing access network infrastructures. To cope with such requirements new access technologies, such as the fiber-wireless (FiWi), are being developed. Together with the emergence of new access networks, efforts are being made to reduce the amount of energy required to provide services. Indeed, this issue plays an incre...
